In the Sphere: Credit, Breaks, and Lies

March 20th, 2010

Are you ready for another blog post roundup? Let’s get started.

Dough Roller helps to clarify an issue that may be confusing many people. What is the difference between a credit report and a credit score? For starters, a report offers a comprehensive summary of your credit history whereas a score is simply a number based on the information contained in your credit report. Which is more important? They both serve their respective purposes.

Bernie Yee had a great time during spring break, but like so many other school vacations, the break was too short for his liking. He returned to school this week, but he would have much preferred if spring break were two weeks rather than just one. That’s okay, Bernie. Summer vacation is just around the corner.

Jeremy Lim is a bit of an audiophile, but you don’t have to be an expert to realize that the little white buds that come with the iPod are far from ideal. Jeremy is tired of these little white lies and is more than happy to invest in some premium earphones or headphones instead.

Zac Johnson is a very successful Internet entrepreneur, owning and running several websites that approach many different niches. Not surprisingly, he can’t run the show on his own, so he hires out for some of his work. That’s why he was disappointed by one freelancer who failed to list contact information on his website. How can I hire you if I can’t contact you?

Raul Pacheco is hosting another contest on his blog and it’s very easy to enter. He’s giving away tickets to Billy Bishop Goes to War at the Arts Club. The contest runs until this coming Monday and all you have to do to enter is to leave a comment on his contest post. Good luck!

Marketing 101: Advertising Your Popularity

March 19th, 2010

One thing that you’ll learn pretty quickly about marketing is that people tend to follow what other people do. There is still a demographic that dares to be different, but the vast majority take much more comfort in doing and buying the things that many others have done (or bought) before them.

If you hear about XYZ product being the number one nationwide best seller, you feel a little more compelled to learn more about it or maybe even buy it. This is true of everything from books and movies to cell phones and high-definition televisions. As such, it’s important if you are achieving a certain level of success or popularity, you should let your audience and your potential customers know about it.

For instance, if you sell premium WordPress themes online, it pays to display a sales count of some of your most popular themes. You won’t want to display this number until it reaches something a little more substantial, however, as smaller numbers can have the exact opposite effect: deterring sales. You can do the same with your Twitter follower count, the number of RSS subscribers to your blog, and the like.

People follow other people. If you show them that many people before them have purchased your products or made use of your services, you are more likely to convince others to do the same.

WordPress Wednesday: Hikari Titled Comments

March 18th, 2010

One of the first things that they’ll teach you in journalism school is the importance of having a good title. It doesn’t really matter how good your article is, how much research you put into it, or how insightful it may be if no one reads the piece in the first place. The title is the hook that draws the reader in further.

The same kind of concept applies to blog writing as well, since the post title can act as a great hook to draw someone into your article. What about the comments that the readers leave behind? For people who can’t bother to read each and every comment, a quick summary can be a lot easier to digest. Titled Comments by Hikari approaches this concern.

In short, it allows readers to define a title to the comments that they leave on your blog. This way, they can make a very quick point or provide a short summary of what the rest of the comment may contain. This isn’t as necessary for shorter comments, but anything longer than a couple of sentences can benefit from having an appropriate title of some kind.

To see screenshots of the WordPress plug-in in action, as well as the download link and other information, you can find Titled Comments at Hikari.ws. The plugin can also be found in the official plugin directory on Wordpress.org.

Business 101: Who Prepares Your Taxes?

March 17th, 2010

For better or for worse, it’s that time of year again. If you run a small business, one of the questions that you to answer is to determine who will be preparing your income tax return. This is true of simpler returns, like sole proprietorships, or more complex returns, like registered corporations.

If you have a home-based business with very little in terms of complexities, it may be easy enough to complete the tax return on your own. There is software out there, like Ufile Standard Edition that can easily handle self-employment income. Don’t be fooled into buying the “Plus” version of the software, because the Standard Edition can do self-employment income.

For more complex returns where you have to file your corporate taxes as well as a personal income tax return, it is probably in your best interest to hire a certified tax professional. There are many more intricacies and details that come into play with this kind of configuration. Even if you have a sole proprietorship, it may still be worthwhile to hire an accountant. There is an added cost, of course, but for many people, it’s worth it.

What about you? Who prepares your income tax return?

Great Gadgets: Creative Live! Cam Notebook Pro

March 16th, 2010

Many laptop computers these days already come with an integrated webcam, but that’s not always true right across the board. If you happen to have a laptop without a webcam, it does not mean that you need to break the bank in order to gain that kind of functionality.

For instance, you can consider something like the Creative Live! Cam Notebook Pro. It’s not the most advanced of webcams on the market, but it is designed to clip onto the top cover of your laptop. This is much more convenient than those that rest on a desk, for instance.

Going through the features and specifications, you’ll find that this Creative webcam has a 1.3 megapixel image sensor and can be used for VGA (640×480 pixel) videos. It is Skype certified and it is perfectly compatible with many other IM and videocall protocols, including Yahoo, MSN, AOL, and Windows Messenger. The Smart Face Tracking technology keeps you in focus too.

You can find the Creative Live! Cam Notebook Pro 1.3 megapixel webcam on Amazon for 12.99. The regular price is $59.99, so the sale will save you $47 (78% off).
